You may know the San Francisco Nonprofit Technology Center is an awesome space for nonprofits to meet, collaborate, and hold trainings and workshops. In addition to the many individuals and groups that come through our door for these purposes each month, we also provide permanent office space for a small group of organizations who work with technology in the service of some inspiring causes.
On April 1, our newest tenant, Upwell, officially joined The Specialists Guild, Sarai, and Aspiration, at the S.F. Tech Center when they moved into our final vacant office and gave us a full house! We’re very proud of the awesome work being done under our roof, so we thought this was a good time to highlight the four organizations that currently make up the Tech Center and tell you about each one.
The newest member of the Tech Center family, Upwell acts as a public relations firm for our planet’s fragile oceans. They work to transform the conversation about oceans by sifting through the online chatter, collecting and curating the best content, and helping conservationists use every opportunity that emerges in real time to draw focus to the most pressing issues.

Many individuals on the autism spectrum have unique talents and skills, yet only 20% of high functioning autistic adults are employed, and the majority of them are in low-skilled jobs that do not use their gifts and interests. This is where The Specialists Guild comes in. Acting on their motto, “Focus on Ability,” The Specialists Guild trains adults on the autism spectrum to perform software testing, then helps them find fulfilling employment with corporations on the open market.
The trainings and testing take place right here at the Tech Center, and it’s great fun for us to see their inspiring work firsthand. At their website, you can learn more about autism and The Specialists Guild, make a donation, or learn how you can hire their trainees for your company!
Sarai provides affordable, ethical, and sustainable tech support for nonprofits and small businesses, both remotely and on site. You can hire them by the hour to complete an individual project, or you can choose one of their comprehensive technology management plans – with pricing based on your organization’s size and needs – and have peace of mind knowing they are on call for all your IT needs!
Sarai has been a pillar of the Tech Center for nearly five years, and we love their commitment to serving nonprofits and their awesome environmental sustainability plan, which includes using bikes, transit, and a Smart Car for most of their site visits. Check out their website and shoot them an email to request your complimentary one-hour consultation.
Aspiration is the founder and primary tenant of the SF Nonprofit Technology Center, and we created the Center in 2006 as an outgrowth of our mission to help nonprofits better utilize technology. We convene and facilitate innovative technology events that bring together nonprofit software users and developers. We also serve as ally, coach, strategist, mentor, and facilitator for those who use information technology for social change.
Aspiration is values-driven: We believe that nonprofits should strive to remain in control of their technology destiny, that technology should build and strengthen relationships, and that free and open tech is almost always preferable when it’s available. Read our complete manifesto where we expound on these and other cornerstones of our philosophy, and learn what we’re all about. You can also email us if you’d like to learn more or find out how we can help your organization!
